Effects of Selenium on Growth, Quality, and Nutrients of Tea Plants

  • An essential micronutrient, selenium (Se) in severe deficiency can lead to Keshan, Kashin-beck, cataract, and other diseases in humans. Ingestion of Se-rich food is one of the most effective ways to ensure an adequate Se supply for good health. Tea plants are naturally capable of accumulating Se, particularly in the leaves. Therefore, drinking tea or eating foods using tea as an ingredient can effectively help meet the nutritional requirement. Subjects on Se enrichment of tea and health are beginning to draw attention by the scientific community. This article reviews the published reports relating to the absorption and effects of Se on the growth, development, and quality of tea plants and discusses the areas of interest for further studies.
