Abstract:
Objective A new tea variety of early-sprouting, high-yield, and aromatic type that met the diverse consumer preference was bred.
Method Using ‘Jinguanyin’ Tea as the maternal parent, ‘Fuming 1’ was selected from the natural hybrid F1 generation by means of single-plant breeding. From 2016 to 2021, a six-year regional trial was conducted at three experimentation sites in Fu'an, Songxi, and Fuzhou, Fujian, using Huangdan Tea as control. Phenological stages at one-bud-one-leaf, two-leaves, and three-leaves, fresh leaf yield, tea quality, and stress resistance of the new variety were evaluated
Result ‘Fuming 1’ displayed similar phenological stages as control with a fresh leaf yield surpassing control by 4.63%-16.96%. The oolong tea made from the plucked ‘Fuming 1’ leaves rendered a unique milky aroma that received a sensory score 0.80-1.27 points higher than that of control. The new variety was strongly tolerant to cold and drought as well as resistant to tea green leafhopper, but was infected with tea anthracnose.
Conclusion The oolong tea made from the leaves of the early-sprouting, high-yield ‘Fuming 1’ delivered an exquisite milky aroma. It was suitable for large scale cultivation in Fu’an, Songxi, and Fuzhou in Fujian, as well as similar tea-producing regions.
