Abstract:
Medog County in Tibet capitalizes its unique geographical advantages, favorable climate, and pristine environment to develop an industry based on the high-mountain organic tea. Using the local specialty product as the focal point, this article systematically dissects the natural and social background, quality characteristics, current status, and foreseeable challenges of the agriculture and industry in the county to analyze its deep, hidden value on ecological conservation and economic development of the region as well as the nation. In Medog County, the industry experienced rapid expansions in recent years with respect to farming scale, product mix, brand name building, and organization renewal. However, constrained by the existing infrastructure, outdated technology, limited brand recognition, and a lack of ground-breaking research and highly talented workforce, the progress was somewhat impeded. Looking forward, It is conceivable that, by applying multidimensional tasks such as upgrading cultivation and processing technologies, promoting the “Ecological Medog” story, expanding market reach, providing policy support, emphasizing benefit-sharing, and improving profit margin by engaging in tea-tourism and new high-quality functional product development, the high-mountain organic tea industry could usher in a modernized, prosperous, and environmentally friendly economy for Xizang Plateau and turn it into a model for the national rural revitalization.
